MATERIALS LIST   |  PLAYHOUSE DIAGRAM

After selecting the site, the first step is to mark out an area measuring 1200 mm x 1200 mm. This can be done with pegs and string line. Corners should be checked for squareness by measuring the diagonals. Both diagonals should measure the same.

Depth of holes should be approximately 250 mm.

Posts are set in the holes and fixed in position with temporary braces until concrete has set. Before pouring concrete, and also after pouring, check that posts are in the correct position. Using a spirit-level, check that the posts are upright and that the tops are all level.

Ends of posts must be painted with wood-preserving oil before setting in concrete. Concrete should be allowed to set for two days before removing braces and commencing assembly.

Of the four floor supports, the two at the left and right sides are load bearing and should be bolted to the posts. Check that these are level by using a, spirit-level. Floor boards are nailed to the floor supports. Note that the two outer boards are notched to clear the posts and the boards have a slight gap between them for drainage.

Roof has a 45 degree pitch giving an apex angle of 90 degrees. The roof trusses can be assembled with the gable end on the ground and then bolted to the posts.

Roof covering is made from 100 mm wide boards. Roof is made up of two layers of boards, the bottom layer has a gap of approximately 53 mm between each board and the top layer is nailed over the gap. Note how the ends of the two layers are staggered at the apex. This allows the boards on the left hand side of the roof to overlap the boards on the right hand side thus giving a water-tight joint at the apex.

The finished unit can be painted with one of the timber stains or timber-coloured paints.
